Mr. Achiever vs Mr. Comforter

Why do we share our goals with anyone?

In most cases, we are looking for a voice that can tell us that we can do it or a voice that can tell us how to do it.

2021 came to an end recently. Like many others I started thinking about the goals I was able to accomplish in 2021 and about my goals for 2022. And following the above logic, I wanted to share my ambitions for 2022 with a friend.

I am fortunate to have a few good friends. All of them are different personalities. So the question I had was which friend / friends should I talk to?

For the sake of simplicity, lets assume I have 2 friends — Mr. Achiever and Mr. Comforter.

As the names suggest, Mr. Achiever is a friend of mine who is ambitious. He is someone who is competitive. He is someone who is a critical thinker. He wants you to succeed but he is only convinced by results.

On the other hand, Mr. Comforter is a friend who makes others comfortable to share their thoughts, someone who is easy to talk to, someone who’s first instinct is optimistic. He wants you to succeed irrespective of your past results. In most cases, he is convinced easily and supports your new ideas.

Jumping back to the story again, I had to make a choice.

I chose to share my goal with Mr. Comforter. More precisely, I told Mr. Comforter that one of my ambitions for 2022 is to start blogging.

And here’s the gist of this blog. Intuitively, the names Mr. Achiever and Mr. Comforter might move your thoughts in a certain direction. But I don’t think Mr. Comforter is a better or a worse friend than Mr. Achiever. Both of them would want me to succeed in life. But the crux of the choice lies in the timing.

I am at a point of time where I am still defining my ideas on blogging. I am not sure how I will go about implementing them. Talking to Mr. Comforter made more sense at this point as he is someone who was ok to support me even in this initial phase. By a pure-personality trait, he was convinced and supported me to go ahead (something all of us need when we try a new venture).

I am sure there will come a point in time when I will share my goals with Mr. Achiever. But by then, I would have results i.e. I would be much ahead in my blogging journey. Mr. Achiever can use his personality trait to give me critical feedback which will help me take the next step in my journey.

To summarize, I will ask again. Why do we share our goals with anyone? Its simply to get their thoughts and perspective. But if you share the idea with a friend at a wrong stage, you might never be able to kick start with your idea or take it to the next level. Its all about the timing. No friend is bad. They are just different personalities.

I wish you luck with your goals for the upcoming year. I hope you and your friends can help each other get to your destination!
